5 simple habits for healthier eyes at work

For many people, working at a computer is part of everyday life. The day starts with emails and continues with documents, presentations and online meetings, while the smartphone often keeps us in front of a screen long after the workday ends. As a result, our eyes get very little time to rest.

By the end of the day, you may notice dryness, burning, a gritty sensation, blurred vision or general eye fatigue. The good news is that a few simple habits can make working at a screen more comfortable and help reduce eye strain.

1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule

When we are focused on work, it is easy to stare at the screen for long periods without looking away. The 20-20-20 rule is a simple way to give your eyes regular breaks: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds.

You can simply look out of the window or focus on something in the distance. The important thing is to give your eyes a short break from focusing on something up close.

2. Remember to blink

We tend to blink less often when concentrating on a computer screen. This can cause the tear film on the surface of the eye to evaporate more quickly, leading to dryness or irritation.

Try to blink consciously and fully, especially when reading text or working with spreadsheets for a long time. Closing your eyes for a few seconds during short breaks can also help restore comfort.

3. Position your monitor correctly

The position of your screen can have a significant impact on visual comfort. Keep the monitor at a comfortable distance, usually around arm’s length, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.

Adjust the brightness so that the screen feels comfortable rather than excessively bright or dark compared with the room. It is also worth reducing glare and reflections from windows and light sources.

4. Take regular breaks from your desk

A good break for your eyes can also be a break for your whole body. Every few hours, get up from your desk, walk around for a few minutes and look into the distance.

Even a short screen-free break can make you feel more comfortable after prolonged computer use. A little movement can also help reduce the physical tension that builds up after sitting at a desk for several hours.

5. Don't ignore what your eyes are telling you

Burning, a gritty sensation, watery eyes, headaches or blurred vision can occur after a long day at the computer. If these symptoms appear frequently or persist, it is worth scheduling an eye examination.

An eye care professional can check your vision and help identify the cause of the discomfort. In some cases, the right prescription or lenses designed for specific visual needs can make working at a computer much more comfortable.

Give your eyes a little more attention

Screens are an essential part of modern work, but your eyes still need regular breaks throughout the day. Looking into the distance, blinking regularly, positioning your monitor correctly and taking short breaks are small habits that can make a big difference to your everyday comfort.

And when eye discomfort becomes a regular part of your workday, an eye examination is a good place to start. Healthy vision is supported by the small choices we make every day.
